Although modern manufacturing techniques mean that there are only relatively small differences in frequency response between microphones built on the same production line, Sonarworks provide an individual calibration file for each mic they provide. This is a clue to one important aspect of the Sonarworks system: microphone calibration.

The mic itself is a somewhat generic-looking silver unit (not dissimilar to a number of low-cost measurement mics out there), though each has its serial number printed clearly on the case.

The full system comes bundled with a measurement mic and the relevant software registration code. The analysis software is used with a measurement microphone, and only requires running once (or if any changes occur to your monitoring setup or environment). The first piece of software is the analysis element, with the second a plugin hosted in your DAW to apply any necessary processing.

Theoretically, one way in which things can be improved is with the use of corrective processing in the audio monitoring chain – and this is where Sonarworks‘ Reference 3 comes in. Reference 3 is a two-part software system available for Mac or Windows. There are many ways in which the perceived sound level at any given frequency can be changed, and even moving your listening position slightly can have an effect – so there is lot that can go wrong.įrequency response analysis of the reviewer’s monitoring environment before calibration with Reference 3 The ‘sound’ of your monitoring is, in reality, a combination of both the acoustics of a given space and the speakers you place in that acoustic environment. More specifically, audio accuracy is the degree to which the audio generated in your DAW (or mixing desk) remains unaltered before arriving at your ears. It is true that upgrading the sound in your studio may not appear to deliver immediate dividends in terms of pure creativity, but it can be a game changer for the quality of your mixes – which will, eventually, feed back into the writing process.

Acoustic treatment and studio monitoring, for many, fall into this latter category. We’ve all fallen prey to this, but sadly it’s often the less immediately glamorous items that can make the most difference. It’s all too easy to get lured into buying the next great synth, plugin or other piece of tech kit in the vain hope that it’s the missing link to production nirvana. The software has since been endorsed by many Grammy-award winning mixing and mastering engineers and has won several industry awards and accolades. The third version of Sonarworks’ calibration software promises to help you get the most out of your monitoring setup.

Sonarworks’ flagship professional audio product, Reference 4 software, removes unwanted coloration and delivers the same accurate studio reference sound on all speakers and headphones. Sonarworks began in 2012 when two music lovers met a scientist - a perfect storm of acoustic know-how and passion for good sound soon became the software that’s currently transforming sound monitoring. The Reference 4.3 update is available free to current users. Striving to support the growing demand and trend for mixing on headphones, the update takes the supported headphone count to 232 with these new models: “For this release, we decided to rewrite Systemwide from ground up with the main aim of improving set-up experience for new users, though we couldn’t help adding some improvements for our existing users as well!” Said Viesturs Marnauza, Product Owner of Reference 4 in an internal newsletter to employees. Having worked hard doing internal research and external testing, the new filter serves as a good middle ground to deliver accurate frequency response and sound quality without introducing significant latency. The Reference 4.3 update also introduces a mixed filter mode with a much-needed improvement over the previous “optimum” version.

The UI on both macOS and Windows can now be switched to dark mode, a long requested feature from the night-owls of the Sonarworks community. Dedicated to both current and new users, the update includes a reworked filter mode as well as usability, latency and onboarding improvements to help experience the software with greater ease.įollowing the complete revamp of the Systemwide app, the update now includes on-demand headphone profile downloads, which makes for a quicker set-up time and also allows users to download profiles for their individually measured headphones directly into the software.
